Declutter Your Life – And Maybe Your Waistline Too
As a mom and a wife, I spend half my life tripping over socks that apparently live in the living room and toys that look like they exploded on the carpet. But here’s the kicker: did you know clutter isn’t just an eyesore? It’s ruining your health, too. Oh yes, science says so.
Let’s talk facts:
📊 The Princeton Neuroscience Institute found that clutter reduces focus and increases stress. Translation? That pile of laundry is literally frying your brain.
📉 According to a study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, women who described their homes as “cluttered” had higher cortisol levels (that’s the stress hormone). Meanwhile, the husbands who didn’t notice the clutter? Probably stress-free, and clueless.
But wait—it gets better:
✨ Decluttering may actually help you lose weight. A study in Psychological Science revealed that people in organized environments were twice as likely to choose healthy snacks. So, clearing off the kitchen counter could mean fewer late-night Oreos. (You’re welcome, metabolism.)
And for my fellow moms struggling to find peace amidst the chaos, here’s some motivation:
💡 Research in The Journal of Environmental Psychology found that a clean and tidy space improves mental health and decreases symptoms of depression. So, when I’m yelling “PUT THAT BACK WHERE YOU FOUND IT,” I’m practically a therapist.
Does this mean decluttering will turn me into a supermodel and bring world peace? Probably not. But hey, if tossing out that junk drawer makes me 5% less likely to snap at my kids, it’s worth a shot.
So, here’s the deal:
- If you’re overwhelmed, start small. (One drawer, one closet, or heck, just one sock.)
- Donate what you don’t need—it might do wonders for someone else’s life and your sanity.
- And when your husband claims he doesn’t “see” the clutter? Hand him this post.
Decluttering won’t solve everything, but it might just give you the space—literally and mentally—to breathe, think, and maybe even sneak in a salad instead of ice cream.
Who knew tossing junk could feel this good? 💁♀️
